What To Expect at the First Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children visit the dentist before their first birthday. At the first visit, we will ask you to fill out the new patient forms, so we can complete a comprehensive review of your medical and dental history.

We will then complete a thorough examination which may include:

Dental X-rays

X-rays are done to check for dental cavities, missing teeth, infection, the position of unerupted teeth, or any other abnormalities. If any need repair, we will examine them and make suggestions for those that can be protected with regular home care, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants. X-rays are recommended every 12 months, depending on previous dental history.

Soft Tissue Examination
A soft tissue examination is done to examine facial growth and development and to determine if any harmful habits, such as thumb sucking, are influencing the natural development of permanent teeth.
A Dental Prophylaxis
A cleaning will be done to remove any plaque and bacteria from your child’s teeth and gums. Our hygienists will also take this time to teach positive dental hygiene habits at home. We highly recommend dental cleanings every six months.

How to Prepare For the First Visit

There are some things the parent or caregiver can do at home to prepare their child for their dental appointment. First and most importantly, please do not use words with a negative connotation, such as needles, shots, drill, pull, hurt, etc. Please do not use the appointment to scare your children when they may act out at home. Our team is trained to make the visit a positive and pleasant experience.

Children often cry at their first appointment. We are prepared for that response since it’s a normal reaction to fear, but anything you can do at home to alleviate their fears ahead of time will make the appointment go smoother. We will work on our end to establish a trusting relationship with the child and help to eliminate the fear.

We don’t like to separate children from their parents or caregivers at the first visit since it can be an overwhelming experience. Please be prepared to stay with them at first, but you are not required to be present for future appointments.
